About the project

Old words should not feel like locked doors.

The Literary Astrolabe is a growing digital library of historical works rendered in direct, contemporary English—made to be read for pleasure, studied closely, heard aloud, and downloaded freely.

Readable

Clear modern prose without fake-archaic language or unnecessary scholarly barriers.

Traceable

Editorial choices, source limitations, and manuscript differences remain visible rather than being smoothed away.

Available

Texts are designed for the page, the screen, and the ear—with free reading and downloadable editions.

Why “Astrolabe”?

An instrument for finding your way.

For centuries, an astrolabe helped travelers locate themselves by reading the stars. This library serves a similar purpose: it gives modern readers a way into literature that can otherwise feel impossibly distant.

The collection begins with biblical apocrypha, early Christian writings, and Augustin Calmet’s The Phantom World. It is intended to grow toward Homer, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and other foundational works.
